It’s gardening time!

Garden Time! with MrHacks on Tumblr!

This year marks the fourth year of gardening and a change of how things are done. The Square Foot Garden Method will be used as well as container gardening. It is a plan I’v had ever since I got started with gardening.

The benefits are that I will no longer use any of the soil in my back yard. An unsettling revelation about what’s been going on at the creek behind my house over the the past fifty years involving the Mallinckrodt during the Atomic Age (see FUSRAP), along with the remediation of the dirt near the creek for Uranium, Radium, Thorium, and other This-will-give-you-cancer-ium isotopes has me thinking about where the dirt came from in my own backyard that wasn’t the dirt that I put in.

Now before everyone gets into a panic, ionizing radiation is practically in everything on this planet. Electronics, including cellphones, produce non-ionizing (low energy) radiation, which is harmless. But the high energy (ionizing) is the stuff that can cause cell damage and cancer.

Interesting enough, plants are more used to radiation exposure. After the Chernobyl disaster, Sunflowers were planted by farmers and discovered that sunflowers could absorb the thorium fallout that contaminated the dirt. The stereotype of nuclear goo (which could really just be a rock emitting ionizing radiation) making mutant large plants are only half true. Some plants will grow larger from radiation exposure, but they won’t turn into bizarre mutant monsters.

Since Chernobyl, the evacuated ghost city of Pripyat, Ukraine has been overrun with plant overgrowth. The plants are now the rulers of the city in the former Soviet republic.

However, my problem isn’t even close to a Chernobyl problem. Not even by a long shot. But it still doesn’t feel right to plant the plants I eat in dirt with possible above average radiation levels. I’m not afraid to live where I live. And the majority of cancers that have occurred in the neighborhood were the result of the kids playing in the creek (which they shouldn’t have even without any warning that the water may have been tainted) or coincidental.

Follow this path of Coldwater Creek through North St. Louis County on Google Maps and realize that this map doesn’t show how many people may have been impacted.

So there is really nothing wrong with living here, just don’t play in the creek and help Florissant Mayor Tom Schneider demand the clean up of the Westlake Landfill which could do much worse damage to North County than what’s in Coldwater Creek as it is where some of the materials from FUSRAP were transfered but could seep into the water table or get flooded out and potentially contaminate the water supply throughout North County.

OK, enough with this nuclear crap. (Go green! Buy a solar panel. I know. I’m working on it.) Time for the gardening part.

As always, this Tumblr site is used to upload pictures of my progress with the garden. A new smartphone this year will probably produce some better detailed pictures of my garden and the places I go to look at other people’s gardens.

The magnolias are in bloom as I speak and cheery blossoms and dogwood should soon follow. Expect pictures.

This year’s garden will concentrate more on herbs and flowers rather than long large plants like last year. Seeing how quickly all my zucchini and pumpkin were decimated by pest bugs last year really got me more motivated to do my gardening indoors, at least until late April or May.

On advice by a local gardening expert at my local TrueValue hardware store, indoor seeding should generally start around the March full moon, which has recently passed. I got a little eager and started some of my herbs indoors early. A couple week later I started most of my usual including peppers and tomatoes.

New plants have been added including peas, garlic, green tomatillo, spinach, lettuce, and broccoli of two types regular and romanesco. The latter will look very awesome to take photos of as it produces natural fractal patterns and have an interesting taste to them supposedly.

I’m hoping to share extra seeds with the neighbors if they are interested.

That seems to be everything for today. Stay tuned for more awesome garden photos.

Pocky boxes are ideal for storing seed packets.

Pocky boxes are ideal for storing seed packets.

Because the 1990s are now considered "Retro" and the Hipsters on Tumblr need a role model

Because the 1990s are now considered “retro”, and this article claims it “perfectly captures the 1990s” when it DOES NOT, not even by a long shot., it’s time you hipsters got an education from a man who lived through the 1990s and lived to tell about it. ME!

Tumblr being “that thing you heard about before everyone else heard about it”, needs people like me to tell the world that there was so much more to 1990s. In fact, most of this sh*t from the Buzzfeed Article, was from the 1980s. Hence all the fugly colors and cheezy processed TV dreck that is still being kicked around in hopes that YOU will tell all your friends about it because some hasbeen child actor will tell you about it during the 5 minutes of programmed preprocessed crap that VH1 or Adult Swim has you believing is cool. (Adult Swim stopped being cool when it canceled Anime for Tim and Eric, who suck.)

I could probably add all sorts of tags to this post today that described the 1990s, and it would be buried under a buch of Saved by the Bell crap, Urkle pics, and Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire lyrical parodies.

So I asked myself all sorts of questions after I read the artcle.

Where’s the pictures of Lady Diana? What about all those cartoons that people remember other than the Simpsons like Pokemon, Beavis and Butt-Head (they were around before they were brought back), or South Park. The Ninja Turtle Movies including the second film with Vanilla Ice. Movies featuring Keanu Reeves (Bill & Ted, Point Break, Speed, The Matrix), Brad Pitt (Seven, 12 Monkeys, Legends of the Fall, Fight Club), and Angelina Jolie (Hackers, Gia, Foxfire)?

Funny how nobody remebers that kid the teenage girls went GAGA over who was on Seaquest DSV. No Buffy the Vampire Slayer listed.

No pictures of the first Gulf War or the first attack on the World Trade Center. No memories of fighting against AIDS, Ebola, or the adorable little monkeys from Outbreak.

No Lost Highway, Trent Reznor, Marlyn Manson, Veruca Salt or Metalica. No Napster. No screen grabs of Yahoo!, Excite, Lycos, or Northern Light. No mention of Virtual Reality, Lawnmower Man, John Mnemonic, VR5 or any of those other films that tried to reference Philip K. Dick or star Malcom McDowell.

They had Kurt Cobain, but no Eddie Vedder. No pictures of Grunge Bands in Garages in Seattle fueled by the heron from the Caffene Junkie from behind the Starbucks.

No George Carlin (who’s best stuff was in the 1990s), Richard Jenny (sp), or Mitch Hedleberg (sp).

No Melissa Virus. No “I Love You” Virus”. No pictures of the woman who sang “No More I Love Yous”. No ska bands, swing bands, or riot girl bands.

No goth chicks trying to look like Death of the Endless from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman reading a first edition of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac before Jhonen Vasquez was known while they while listened to a CD player playing Siouxsie and the Banshees (they were on the Batman Returns soundtrack and their last album was in 1995). Not enough Alanis Morissette (quite ironic), Jewel, or Whitney Houston. (Unless that was her on that Vouge Cover). No memories of Gwen Steffani from when she was in a Ska band and not this crappy pop star. No mention of Alternative Rock, the Industrial Rock, or even that those short periods where Rap met Rock.

No lanyards, glow in the dark toys or Nintendo 64s with Goldeneye playing in it.

No gameboys, Game Gears, or NSXes. Not even girls who were listening to INXS or Sevendust or Cyprus Hill or Rage Against The Machine.

No nods to Akira, Ghost In the Shell, or Haeyo Miyazaki?

No Hurricane Andrew, Flood of 1993, or the movie Twister or Forrest Gump.

No pictures of the war in Bosnia.

No Garth Brooks or Three Tenors.

No Pam Anderson or David Hasselhoff from Baywatch.

Are the people from Buzzfeed asleep or were they just not paying attention to what was going on in the 1990s?

Philip K.

It’s nice to see a New Year’s Wish rendered as a poster…

SOPA tabled, but RIAA and MPAA members broke their own PRO-IP Laws

It’s a rather amusing follow up to yesterday’s posts. Apparently, under the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008 (PRO-IP Act), the very proof that Sony, Universal, and Fox stole from each other, is a violation of the very laws they were in support of. Gosh, I hope they didn’t pass any other stupid laws that would make corporations be reconginzed as people such that they are subject to the same criminal procecution as people—OH WAIT THEY DID!

So if by chance these hypocrites who’ve been robbing each other then accusing the casual user of stealing content, their is a very strong defense, WITH PICTURES (see that story from TorrentFreak), that proves that they’ve been committing most of these piracy crimes they want Joe Sixpack to take the fall for.

If it ever comes back—which it will and it will die in a spectacularly hammy way—SOPA doesn’t have a chance to become law, not even if it became a rider for some other bill unrelated to IP law.

To the folks at RIAA and MPAA: GAME OVER! YOU LOST! DO NOT PASS GO! DO NOT COLLECT $200. AND DO NOT COME BACK TO THE INTERNET OR WASHINGTON WITH YOUR HYPOCRACY!

Breaking SOPA News of the Day: After Thursday’s...

thedailywhat:

Breaking SOPA News of the Day: After Thursday’s 11-hour hearing on over 50 amendments to the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act, the House Judiciary Committee was expected to approve the sending of the unaltered legislation to the floor.

But, in an optimistic twist, today’s hearing was abruptly adjourned, with the future of the so-called “Internet Blacklist Bill” suddenly less certain.

Despite the act’s supporters in the Judiciary Committee outweighing its skeptics by a margin of nearly two to one, SOPA’s author, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), agreed to consider speaking with cybersecurity expects about the bill’s potential impact.

83 prominent Internet inventors and engineers recently published an open letter to Congress, insisting that both SOPA and its Senate counterpart PIPA “will risk fragmenting the Internet’s global domain name system (DNS) and have other capricious technical consequences.”

“NetCoalition is encouraged that Chairman Smith is considering the requests of many on the committee that additional hearings be conducted, particularly on the issue of Internet security, in order that the committee be fully briefed on the potentially serious and negative consequences that the proposed legislation would create,” said NetCoalition executive director Markham Erickson.

Though SOPA proponents appear to be softening their steadfastly pro-industry stance on certain issues, it remains likely that an amended bill will be approved as soon as the committee reconvenes, which could be as early as next week.

The Senate’s anti-piracy legislation left committee a while ago, and is expected to be voted on early next year.

[thehill / wired / deadline.]

See Also: In case of SOPA, use this list.

Well, shortly after I wrote my previous post, SOPA gets tabled.

Just remember what I said about running for office so that someone with a clue know to kill this thing next year.

SOPA, PIPA, and NDAA: Why the status quo is scared sh*tless now that the Internet can launch revolutions

2011 was a year of revolution. From the Arab Spring to the American Autumn.

It has exposed the abuse of power by law enforcement, ousted dictators, and called out the oligarcy that is establishing tyranny.

But the United States, the status quo government officials (mostly Republicans), and the people from Hollywood, the Entertainment, Music, and Advertising industries who have bought their own representatives through the seedy lobbyists who make it so, feel threatened by this new era where the Internet can start revolutions.

The status quo is a force of people who are the establishment. They fear change, like it when people are passive and subdued by television, pharmaseuticals, and the mindless consumer consumption fed by Hollywood superstars, pointless celebrities (i.e. the Kardashian-COMCAST family and the Hiltons), white trash reality TV programming, and unintellectually stimulating content that is played constantly and with repetition by boring playlists on the FM/AM/XM record industry inbetween the stations that haven’t converted to sports talk or right-leaning politics and religious propaganda.

This year we proved to that system that we are a threat to that establishment. And to them if something is a threat, it is a bully or a terrorist, or some jobless bum they should just ignore because “these people feel entitled to something”.

And because we have thrown a brick into their glass house containing their golden calf, we are now a sinister group of people because we don’t like the way things are (and for good reason), and we aren’t playing by their rules (also for good reason).

So now they are doing what they can to limit our freedoms, and take away the medium that allows us to unite and express our discontent with a system that last year MANUFACTURED it’s own revolution. You may remember the Tea Party, how they were lead by Glenn Beck and Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks. (It’s called FreedomWorks because it works for THEIR freedoms, not ours.) And how now it has silently faded out into the background except when some Republican takes the stage at some conference for the angry white people it represents.

Compare that to the 99%/Occupy Movement. How an Anonymous group of individuals started up a revolution against the bankers who got bailed out, made record profits, and foreclosed on occupied property owned by people who lost their jobs, pensions, retirements, college savings for their kids, and the American Dream because some bankers didn’t like the new regulations that were being passed against them so that they wouldn’t hurt people like they did in the past decade.

Our Corporate Masters/Owners have retaliated against us. Their MANUFACTURED Tea Party Movement has established a blockade in Congress full of uncompromising hard-right establishment supporters who will not work with any democrat or republican who is willing to make fair compromises and do their job representing the people they represent not the corporations that own them.

They assume that if they take away our rights, that they will gain control of the people and coral any future revoltion, protest, or sit-in that threatens their “our way or the highway” plans. These are the same people who established Free Speech Zones during the Bush-Cheney Era. These are the same people who see war as profitable rather than something to be abhorred. These are the same people who turn a blind eye to the injustices of excessive force and the treatment of prisoners, the disabled, and minorities.

These are the people who will be ousted from power next year. It won’t be Obama as the candidates that are currently running for president are part of that establishment. Find us a republican who actually will stand up against the establishment and not start any wars be it against another country, another religion, another lifestyle, or another group of people, and I will guarantee that person will be the next Republican president of the United States. That person, at this time, has either not come forward (or can’t come forward due to the establishment) or does not exists.

Meanwhile the establishment has turned our property into a battlefield (NDAA), seeks to censor the internet with strict zero-tolerance (SOPA/PIPA), and has allowed the prosecution of those who can not defend themselves (DMCA). The Internet and its engineers will not longer stand for these abuses of power and has big, big plans for the people who stand up for the establishment and the abuse of power.

2011 was just the tip of the iceberg, Imagine what it will be like in 2012.

If the world is indeed to come to an end next year according to the believers of Mayan Prophecy, it is not the end of the world they have predicted, but the end of the establishment and the bigotry that has put the world in danger through their financial mechanism that served to enrich the wealth of the establishment at the expense of everybody else.

The new America will have healthcare for all, restore free expression, reignite our space program (which was depreciated by the anti-science zealots who fail to understand that humans are contributing to global climate change), demonopolize the media, repatriate our manufacturing base and do it so that it works with the environment not against it, continue transparency in government, rebuild our national infrastructure, and put eve the discouraged workers back to work.

It’s time for a new New Deal! It’s time to take back our Internet and our Economy from these establishment-men and put in more revolutionary-men.

If the people who were part of the Occupy Movement were part of a mini-government in 2011 are reading this, it’s time to get serious! It’s time for YOU to run for office. Their is no age limit on how old you have to be to run for congrees. (Well, maybe 18. I mean if you are old enough to vote, you should be old enough to hold office somehwere.) Run for mayor, run for state representative or senator, run for anything!

The first step for dissolving any establishment is run for office and to elect people who are not part of the establishment and who aren’t running to preserve the establishment.

You’re not going to win office if your priorities are controversial (i.e. Pro-Life, Pro-Gun, Pro-War, Pro-Pot). Stay away from God, Guns, and Greed, and you will succeed!

If you are running for Government, don’t run so that their is less government. Less government and deregulation cause problems like the Great Depression and the Great Recession. Run on a platform of REWRITING government such that it is not ambigious. NDAA was so ambiguous because it was rushed and because it was something the establishment has been vying for for years. We need people to redefine the NDAA to not do what the people who supported it want to do. (Which from the way it is written, they’d like to start a war in this country.) Putting some young blood into office who know the cost of freedom but at the same time knows that war is not supposed to be a cash cow and that any war used as such, where a third party make there money off it, is far more immoral than a war based on two beligerants themselves.

We need people to be diplomatic not xenophobic. We need people who are willing to trade with other countries but not sell our country out or take advantage of the social problems of others.

We need people who will put lobbyists and super political action committees out of business. Their is no room in this world for Karl Rove or the Koch Brothers.

We need people who have a stragegic plan to protect our electronic networks and to prevent conflicts from adversaries. The use of force is only used by people who aren’t intelligent enough to creatively avoid conflict.

WE NEED YOU TO RUN FOR OFFICE!

I always find it quite amusing that whenever I vote for someone during the presidential election, thier are like twelve different people running for president and 10 of them are part of some minority party we’ve never heard of, but only two or three people running for governor, senator, represenative, or some other lower level of power. You will find greater success being elected if you start at the local level where the establishment is made up of three or four people who control 99% of the region’s future. Make a change and a difference. And make some plans to know what you’d like to do when you get to that level of leadership! Bad leaders are often unprepared and often take their orders from other people. Which is how the establishment has a voice in the government right now. The majority people who you elected (save for a few people) aren’t thinking for themselves. They are merely the avatars for somebody else’s agenda. So ALWAYS make your own plans and have a plan B, C, D, and E when the people who get there won’t accept your plans because you aren’t part of their clique yet. (There’s shouldn’t be any cliques to begin with!)

So take up the fight! Get interested in politics. Run for office. And most importantly have a plan!

Let’s take down the establishment, and occupy congress!

The Egregious Crime of Manga Plagiarism Is Far Worse Than Manga Piracy! (NSFW)

THE FOLLOWING POSTS CONTAINS LINKS TO A SITE THAT CONTAINS GRAPHIC CONTENT IS CONSIDERED NOT SAFE FOR WORK (NSFW!) If you find any of the content that I am sharing with you in this post patently offensive, then do not click on those links. In fact, Google “Manga Plagiarism”. I’m sure there will be some website with half a clue as to the crisis at hand. VIEWER DISCRETION IS STRONGLY ADVISED!

The Japanese are a very nationalistic people. In other cultures, their pro-Japanese behavior is sometimes considered racist. They aren’t too keen about people of mixed race (even people from China or Korea) or foreigners—especially Westerners!

While these statements do not apply to everyone of Japanese decent or from the island nation, the visceral comments (NSFW on both links!) left on the Japanese 2ch boards (the site which inspired the creation of 4chan) about the piracy of manga and anime have infuriated both Japanese and non-Japanese alike. And Sankaku Complex (NSFW) appears to be ground zero for this both the problem of piracy but also the more egregious problem: PLAGIARISM! (caution, NSFW!)

If there is anything more shocking and controversial than the pornographic content on Sankaku Complex (which for the rest of this post will be refered to as SC) which is sometimes discussed on the otaku (nerd) website, it is the irrefutable evidence that various manga producers have engaged in blatant and deliberate acts of plagiarism! And the problem is not limited to Japan!

SC gives some pretty thorough accounts, via 2ch (pronounced “two channel”, by the way,) in which some of the most popular publishers on both sides of the ocean have conspired to let Google Images and some Photoshopping do the drawing for them.

I’m sure many of you were shocked to read about the incidents where the Chinese were making knock-offs of various corporations and OEM (original equiment manufacturer) products they weren’t supposed to sell but did anyway under a different name that was a parody of the name of the product the item was suppost to represent. China is no stranger to Manga Plagarism, and Japan has been livid about this problem. But mention it happening in Japan and there is denial by accused publishers who are currently being authoritarian in their pursuit in cracking down on people uploading manga on the Internet. Does this sound familiar? It should.

Those of you who recall in the last decade the whole incident with RIAA suing grandmas with no computers, 12 year old girls, and dead people and trying to send people to the gallows for downloading a single track. I mean, look how well that turned out of them. It was a total failure and in the end, self-publishing became more popular among artists who could sell their music directly on iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby, or just give it out for free and not get ripped off by their record label.

Japan’s problem with the manga and anime industry is the same problem the music industry had here in the West, and they refuse to adapt their business model to this new technology that is all the rage in the west right now with Graphic.ly and ComiXology and downloadable content provided by Marvel, DC, Top Cow, and just about any other comic book producer you can think of. But the manga producers don’t want to have any part of it. (NSFW) And they will lose because if it.

For a nation that has an aging population, deep racial tensions, and a decreasing birth rate because of those problem, their most interesting export appears to have the same problem that just about every other industry is having in the world right now.

The manga industry is having issues with closing down studios and firing Mangaku (manga artists) because of what the industry deems a “lack of talent”. In other words, it finds it more profitable keeping the artists who rip off other producers (until the get caught and deny like hell) and suing anyone with two hands and a keyboard regardless if they have a scanner or not.

The most recent offender/victim is Jump Magnazine who was caught committing one of the most vulgar things any artist can do: TRACING! (NSFW)

Yet the resources in punishing piracy (especially by the locals who share new manga with Westerners) are being far more invested in than the punishment of ripping off other manga. (There is a distinction of parody and homage, but as you can see in the SC posts, there is very little of that.)

However, it becomes a Western problem when the images of Westerners (and especially of celebrities, fashion designers, and even basketball players) are inserted, altered, and yet you can clearly tell these images were photoshopped! (NSFW)

Yet the mainstream press hasn’t even picked up this story, even during the NBA players strike.

We have yet to scratch the surface of this problem, and with Hollywood Lawyers salivating for SOPA and PIPA support (which this post in no way justifies support as there is nothing to support the case for internet censorship), they didn’t bother to stick up for people and companies whose images and products were used without permission. (It’s one thing to do it on a message board or blog but completely different if your industry is in book publishing.)

I’m hoping tonight’s post will raise awareness of how completely f*cked up the global market is, Japan’s manga industry, and American law. Because from what I’ve read the past few months, nobody has been properly informed about the real egregious crimes that go on in the world while the victimless crimes are expected to be severely punished. The priority for justice no longer serves the people no mater what country you live in, no matter whose laws you follow, no matter if your government is a democracy or a diet. The law goes after the wrong people for the wrong reason at the wrong time.

Hopefully the Japanese will wake up and smell the wasabi and realize the true criminals are the ones calling themselves victims as that doesn’t seem to be happening here Stateside.

thedailywhat:
